Chapter 18

1 NOW in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

2 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Ahi, the daughter of Zechariah.

3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.

4 He removed the high places and broke the images and cut down the idols and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for the children of Israel had gone astray after it, and until those days they did burn incense to it; and they called it Nehushtan.

5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel, so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah nor among those who were before him.

6 For he held fast to the LORD and turned not aside from following him, but kept his commandments, according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.

7 And the LORD was with him; and wherever he went forth he conquered; and he rebelled against the king of Assyria and served him not.

8 He smote the Philistines as far as Gaza and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

9 In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it.

10 And at the end of three years he took it, even in the sixth year of Hezekiah; that is, in the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

11 And the king of Assyria carried away Israel to Assyria and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, the cities of Media,

12 Because they did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded them, and would not hearken nor do them.

13 Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.

14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from attacking me; and whatever tribute you lay on me I will bear. And the king of Assyria imposed upon Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the king's house.

16 At that time Hezekiah stripped off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

17 Then the king of Assyria sent Tartan and the Rab-shakeh and Rab-sisak from Lachish to King Hezekiah with a great army to Jerusalem. And they came up against Jerusalem, and when they were come up they stood by the ascent of the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the palace's field.

18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was the steward of the household, and Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

19 Then the Rab-shakeh said to them, Speak now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: What confidence is this in which you trust?

20 You have said that you are a good speaker and that you have counsel and strength for war. Now on whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?

21 Now, behold, you have trusted upon the staff of the broken reed, even on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it; so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

22 But if you say to me, We trust in the LORD our God; is it not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has removed, and has said to Judah and Jerusalem, You shall worship before a single altar in Jerusalem?

23 Now therefore, make an alliance with my lord the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you have riders to set upon them.

24 How then will you refuse the request of one of the least nobles of my master's servants and put your trust in the Egyptian to give you chariots and horsemen?

25 And now perhaps you think that I have come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.

26 Then said Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah to Rab-shakeh, Speak to your servants in the Aramaic; for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language in the presence of the people who are on the wall.

27 But the Rab-shakeh said to them, It was not to you and to your master that my master has sent me to speak these words, but to the men who are sitting on the wall, that they may not eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you.

28 Then the Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spoke, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria;

29 Thus says the king: Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he shall not be able to deliver you out of my hands;

30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

31 Do not hearken to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat every one of you of his own vine and of his own fig tree and drink every one the waters of his own cistern,

32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of many kinds of fruit trees, a land of grain and vineyards, a land of olive trees and of fatness and of honey, that you may live and not die; and do not listen to Hezekiah, and let not Hezekiah deceive you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.

33 Has any of the gods of the nations been able to deliver his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

34 Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvim, Dena, and Ivah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hands?

35 Who are there among all the gods of these nations that have delivered their country out of my hands, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hands?

36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king had commanded, saying, Do not answer him.

37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, the steward of the household, and Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rab-shakeh.

5 Er vertrauete dem HErrn3068, dem GOtt430 Israels3478, daß nach310 ihm seinesgleichen nicht war unter6440 allen Königen4428 Judas, noch vor ihm gewesen.

6 Er5493 hing1692 dem HErrn3068 an und310 wich nicht hinten von ihm ab und hielt8104 seine Gebote4687, die der HErr3068 Mose4872 geboten hatte6680.

7 Und5647 der HErr3068 war mit ihm; und wo er auszog3318, handelte er klüglich7919. Dazu ward er abtrünnig4775 vom Könige4428 zu Assyrien804 und war ihm nicht untertan.

8 Er schlug5221 auch die Philister6430 bis gen Gasa und ihre Grenze1366, von den Schlössern an bis an die festen4013 Städte5892.

9 Im vierten7243 Jahr8141 Hiskias2396, des Königs4428 Judas (das war1121 das siebente7637 Jahr8141 Hoseas1954, des Sohns Elas425, des Königs4428 Israels3478), da zog5927 Salmanesser, der König4428 zu Assyrien804, herauf wider Samaria8111 und belagerte sie6696;

10 und gewann3920 sie nach7097 dreien7969 Jahren8141, im sechsten8337 Jahr8141 Hiskias2396; das ist, im neunten8672 Jahr8141 Hoseas1954, des Königs4428 Israels3478, da3920 ward Samaria8111 gewonnen.

11 Und der König4428 zu Assyrien804 führete Israel3478 weg1540 gen Assyrien804 und setzte sie5148 zu Halah2477 und Habor2249, am Wasser5104 Gosan1470, und in die Städte5892 der Meder4074,

12 darum daß sie nicht gehorchet hatten8085 der Stimme6963 des HErrn3068, ihres Gottes430, und übergangen hatten5674 seinen Bund1285 und alles, was Mose4872, der Knecht5650 des HErrn3068, geboten hatte6680; der hatten8085 sie keinem gehorchet noch getan6213.

13 Im vierzehnten Jahr8141 aber des Königs4428 Hiskia2396 zog5927 herauf Sanherib5576, der König4428 zu Assyrien804, wider alle festen1219 Städte6240 Judas und5892 nahm sie8610 ein.

14 Da sandte Hiskia2396, der König4428 Judas, zum Könige von Assyrien804 gen Lachis3923 und7760 ließ7971 ihm sagen559: Ich habe5375 mich versündiget, kehre um7725 von mir; was du mir auflegest, will ich tragen2398. Da legte5414 der König von Assyrien804 auf Hiskia2396, dem Könige Judas, dreihundert7969 Zentner3603 Silbers3701 und dreißig7970 Zentner3603 Goldes2091.

15 Also gab5414 Hiskia2396 all das Silber3701, das im Hause1004 des HErrn3068 und4428 in den Schätzen214 des Königshauses funden ward4672.

16 Zur selbigen Zeit6256 zerbrach7112 Hiskia2396, der König4428 Judas, die Türen1817 am Tempel1964 des HErrn3068 und die Bleche547, die er selbst hatte überziehen6823 lassen, und gab5414 sie dem Könige4428 von Assyrien804.

17 Und5975 der König4428 von Assyrien804 sandte7971 Tharthan8661 und den Erzkämmerer7249 und den Rabsake von Lachis3923 zum Könige4428 Hiskia2396 mit großer3515 Macht2426 gen Jerusalem3389; und sie zogen935 herauf5927. Und da sie hinkamen935, hielten sie an der Wassergrube bei dem obern5945 Teich1295, der da liegt an der Straße4546 auf5927 dem Acker7704 des Walkmüllers3526.

18 Und1004 rief7121 dem Könige4428. Da kam heraus3318 zu ihnen2142 Eliakim, der Sohn1121 Hilkias2518, der Hofmeister, und Sebena, der Schreiber5608, und Joah3098, der Sohn1121 Assaphs, der Kanzler.

19 Und der Erzschenke7262 sprach559 zu ihnen: Lieber, sagt dem Könige Hiskia2396: So spricht559 der große1419 König4428, der König4428 von Assyrien804: Was ist das für ein Trotz986, darauf du559 dich982 verlässest?

20 Meinest du559, es1697 sei noch Rat6098 und8193 Macht1369 zu streiten4421? Worauf verlässest du denn nun dich982, daß du abtrünnig4775 von mir bist worden?

21 Siehe, verlässest du982 dich982 auf diesen zerstoßenen7533 Rohrstab4938, auf Ägypten4714? welcher, so sich jemand drauf lehnet, wird er376 ihm in die Hand3709 gehen935 und sie durchbohren5344. Also ist Pharao6547, der König4428 in Ägypten4714, allen, die sich auf ihn verlassen5564.

22 Ob ihr aber wolltet zu mir sagen559: Wir verlassen uns982 auf6440 den HErrn3068, unsern GOtt430, ist‘s5493 denn nicht der, des Höhen1116 und Altäre4196 Hiskia2396 hat abgetan und gesagt559 zu Juda3063 und Jerusalem3389: Vor diesem Altar4196, der zu Jerusalem3389 ist, sollt ihr anbeten7812?

23 Nun gelobe meinem Herrn113, dem Könige4428 von Assyrien804; ich3201 will dir zweitausend505 Rosse5483 geben5414, daß du mögest Reiter7392 dazu geben5414.

24 Wie willst du denn bleiben vor dem geringsten6996 Herrn113, einem259 meines Herrn Untertanen, und5650 verlässest dich982 auf6440 Ägypten4714 um7725 der Wagen7393 und Reiter6571 willen?

25 Meinest du559 aber, ich sei ohne1107 den HErrn3068 heraufgezogen, daß ich diese Stätte4725 verderbete? Der HErr3068 hat5927 mich‘s geheißen: Zeuch hinauf5927 in dies Land776 und7843 verderbe7843 es!

26 Da sprach559 Eliakim, der Sohn1121 Hilkias2518, und Sebena und Joah3098 zum Erzschenken7262: Rede1696 mit deinen Knechten5650 auf syrisch762, denn wir verstehen es; und rede nicht mit uns8085 auf jüdisch3066 vor den Ohren241 des Volks5971, das auf der Mauer2346 ist1696.

27 Aber der Erzschenke7262 sprach559 zu ihnen: Hat1696 mich denn mein Herr113 zu deinem Herrn113 oder zu dir gesandt7971, daß ich solche Worte1697 rede? Ja zu den Männern582, die auf der Mauer2346 sitzen3427, daß sie7272 mit euch ihren eigenen Mist6675 fressen398 und ihren Harn saufen8354.

28 Also stund der Erzschenke7262 und rief7121 mit lauter1419 Stimme6963 auf5975 jüdisch3066; und redete1696 und sprach559: Höret8085 das Wort1697 des großen1419 Königs4428, des Königs4428 von Assyrien804!

29 So spricht559 der König4428: Laßt euch5377 Hiskia2396 nicht aufsetzen; denn er vermag3201 euch nicht zu erretten5337 von meiner Hand3027.

30 Und559 laßt euch Hiskia2396 nicht5337 vertrösten auf den HErrn3068, daß er saget Der HErr3068 wird uns982 erretten5337, und diese Stadt5892 wird nicht in die Hände3027 des Königs4428 von Assyrien804 gegeben5414 werden!

31 Gehorchet Hiskia2396 nicht! Denn so4325 spricht559 der1612 König4428 von3318 Assyrien804: Nehmet an meine Gnade1293 und6213 kommet zu8085 mir heraus, so soll jedermann376 seines Weinstocks und376 seines Feigenbaums essen398 und376 seines Brunnens953 trinken8354,

32 bis ich komme und776 hole euch in ein Land776, das776 eurem Lande776 gleich ist935, da Korn1715, Most8492, Brot3899, Weinberge3754, Ölbäume2132, Öl3323 und776 Honig1706 innen ist3947; so werdet ihr leben bleiben und nicht sterben4191. Gehorchet Hiskia2396 nicht; denn er2421 verführet euch, daß er spricht559: Der HErr3068 wird uns8085 erretten5337.

33 Haben auch5337 die Götter430 der Heiden1471 ein376 jeglicher sein Land776 errettet von der Hand3027 des Königs4428 von Assyrien804?

34 Wo sind die Götter430 zu Hemath und Arphad? Wo sind die Götter430 zu Sepharvaim5617, Hena2012 und Iwa5755? Haben sie auch5337 Samaria8111 errettet von meiner Hand3027?

35 Wo ist ein GOtt430 unter aller Lande776 Göttern, die ihr Land776 haben5337 von meiner Hand3027 errettet, daß der HErr3068 sollte Jerusalem3389 von meiner Hand3027 erretten5337?

36 Das1697 Volk5971 aber schwieg2790 stille und antwortete6030 ihm nichts; denn der König4428 hatte geboten4687 und gesagt559: Antwortet6030 ihm nichts!

37 Da kam935 Eliakim, der Sohn1121 Hilkias2518, der Hofmeister, und1004 Sebena, der Schreiber5608, und Joah3098, der Sohn1121 Assaphs, der Kanzler, zu Hiskia2396 mit zerrissenen7167 Kleidern899 und sagten5046 ihm an2142 die Worte1697 des Erzschenken7262.

22 But if you say to me, We trust in the LORD our God; is it not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has removed, and has said to Judah and Jerusalem, You shall worship before a single altar in Jerusalem?

23 Now therefore, make an alliance with my lord the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you have riders to set upon them.

24 How then will you refuse the request of one of the least nobles of my master's servants and put your trust in the Egyptian to give you chariots and horsemen?

25 And now perhaps you think that I have come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.

26 Then said Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah to Rab-shakeh, Speak to your servants in the Aramaic; for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language in the presence of the people who are on the wall.

27 But the Rab-shakeh said to them, It was not to you and to your master that my master has sent me to speak these words, but to the men who are sitting on the wall, that they may not eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you.

28 Then the Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spoke, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria;

29 Thus says the king: Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he shall not be able to deliver you out of my hands;

30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

31 Do not hearken to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat every one of you of his own vine and of his own fig tree and drink every one the waters of his own cistern,

33 Has any of the gods of the nations been able to deliver his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

34 Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvim, Dena, and Ivah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hands?

34 Wo sind die Götter430 zu Hemath und Arphad? Wo sind die Götter430 zu Sepharvaim5617, Hena2012 und Iwa5755? Haben sie auch5337 Samaria8111 errettet von meiner Hand3027?

35 Who are there among all the gods of these nations that have delivered their country out of my hands, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hands?

35 Wo ist ein GOtt430 unter aller Lande776 Göttern, die ihr Land776 haben5337 von meiner Hand3027 errettet, daß der HErr3068 sollte Jerusalem3389 von meiner Hand3027 erretten5337?

36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king had commanded, saying, Do not answer him.
